Girls Aloud are a British girl group created by TV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. The group, consisting of Cheryl Cole [nee Tweedy], Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, has become one of the most successful British pop groups of the decade, with a record-breaking sixteen consecutive Top 10 singles [including three number ones], four platinum albums [including a number one] and record sales in excess of 4.2 million in the UK. They are Smash Hits Poll Winners, have won a TMF Award and have been nominated for a BRIT Award. Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one in the UK Charts [with their platinum-selling debut single 'Sound of the Underground'], and have since become one of the few reality television groups to have had continued success. Guinness World Records list them as the Most Successful Reality TV Group in the 2007 edition, and also the Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group in the 2008 edition. For a contemporary pop group manufactured on reality television they have received unprecedented praise from broadsheet newspapers and the rock music press.
The all-conquering reality stars Girls Aloud return for a fifth full-length outing in the shape of 'Out Of Control', an album with a myriad of influences and pop styles incorporated. After the prominence and celebrity of Cheryl Cole, thanks to her high-profile personal life and appearance as a judge on ITV's The X Factor talent show, this release comes with great fan expectation attached. The girls themselves appear to be dabbling with retro influences including drum 'n' bass, 80s and 90s dance music and balladry. As with previous releases, the Xenomania songwriting team are at work behind the scenes. The first single to be taken from the album is 'The Promise', which was released on October 20th 2008 and topped the charts, gaining their fourth No.1.
